Capital of Cordoba province, Spain, on the
river Guadalquivir; population (1986)
305,000. Paper, textiles, and copper products
are manufactured here. It has many Moorish
remains, including the mosque, now a
cathedral, founded by 'Abd-ar-Rahman I in
785, which is one of the largest Christian
churches in the world. Cordoba was probably
founded by the Carthaginians; it was held by
the Moors 711-1236.
